Kitabe.com is a new and growing audiobook rental service with a bright future. They have an attractive, easy–to–navigate site and some of the best prices we’ve seen—their Silver Membership, which allows you to have one audiobook at a time, is only $10.95/month. They offer a 10–day free trial period, so you can explore the service before purchasing a membership.
At the time we did this review, Kitabe.com only had 3,500 titles. Many of the titles are available in MP3 format. This is convenient if you have an MP3 player because an audiobook that would typically be on 12 CDs fits on one.
In addition to many common categories, Kitabe.com offers New York Times and USA Today best sellers lists, Popular Selections, Top 101 Rented and more. This makes it easy to find a book if you’re not sure what to rent.
Another useful feature to help you decide on an audiobook is a sample reading. The samples are clear and give you good idea of an audiobook before you decide to rent it. However, not all audiobooks have samples.
Kitabe.com also offers audiobook rentals to Canadian customers—the prices for Canadians are slightly higher.
Our final thoughts on Kitabe.com—the site had a fun, clean interface and the prices can’t be beat. Nevertheless, they need to increase the number of titles they offer to be more competitive.
